Buildertrend University: A Hands-On Reset for Our Business
Spoiler alert: Our Buildertrend “health score” was a humbling 17 out of 100.
That number hit hard. We’ve been using Buildertrend for more than six years, but it’s clear we were barely scratching the surface of what the platform could do. We weren’t using templates. Our estimating tools were underutilized. We hadn’t touched some of the features we were paying for.
So instead of attending Buildertrend University solo to try and fix things from the top down, I decided to bring the whole team to Omaha for the two-day training conference. It ended up being one of the best decisions we’ve made for our business!
Here’s what happened—and why I think Buildertrend University is a must for any builder ready to level up.
Inside Buildertrend University
Held at Buildertrend Headquarters in Omaha, this event was a two-day deep dive into the platform. And let me tell you—it’s not your typical conference.
Each training session was small (15–20 builders per room), interactive, and designed for hands-on learning with feature-based classes. We worked directly inside our live Buildertrend account, so everything we learned was immediately applicable. The staff was organized, supportive, and super knowledgeable.
There were even early morning group runs, team dinners, and plenty of laughs along the way! There’s something powerful about stepping out of your daily routine and spending focused time working on the business instead of in it.
Favorite Features + Big Takeaways
We uncovered so many tools and features we hadn’t been using—or weren’t using well. A few that stood out:
AI-powered daily logs that generate smart summaries for better communication
Pre-loaded templates for budgeting, scheduling, and bids
Bid presentation tools that create a cleaner, more professional client experience
Client communication features we hadn’t fully explored
Monthly check-ins with our Buildertrend account rep to keep us accountable
One of the biggest mindset shifts was recognizing Buildertrend as a high-powered system that most of us are driving like a used minivan. There’s so much under the hood—if you’re willing to take the time to learn it.
Here's more about it in our podcast episode!
Why Bring the Team?
In the past, I’d attend conferences or training, come back fired up, and then try to implement changes… solo. It rarely worked.
This time was different. Every person on our team came away with their own takeaways, insights, and ideas for how we could do things better after hands-on training. And because we experienced it together, we could hit the ground running when we got back.
We held a post-trip team meeting, listed out our Top 10 Takeaways, and created an implementation plan—together. This is such a game changer for our long-term success!
Beyond the Software
Some of the most valuable moments didn’t happen in a classroom—they happened over lunch, dinner, and in-between sessions.
We spent 2.5 hours talking to Jeff from Peak 3 in Aspen, trading stories about cost-plus contracts, difficult clients, and what we’ve learned the hard way. It was honest, unfiltered, and incredibly encouraging.
What struck me most? Whether you’re building in Minnesota, Georgia, or Colorado, we’re all facing similar challenges. These kinds of conversations remind you that you’re not alone—and that there’s always room to grow.
Sabbaticals + Scaling for Freedom
One moment that stuck with me came from Buildertrend’s own leadership team. They offer employees a 4-week paid sabbatical after 5 years of service.
It made me pause.
We talk a lot about growing businesses, building better systems, and becoming more efficient—but what’s the why behind it all?
For me, that conversation was a reminder: we’re not scaling for complexity—we’re scaling for freedom. I want to create a business where I can travel with my family, take meaningful time off, and know the team is empowered to lead. I want that for them, too.
Buildertrend University helped me see that clearer than ever!
Invest in Your Team, Not Just Your Tools
Buildertrend University wasn’t just a software training. It was a strategic reset for our entire company.
We didn’t walk away with one magic fix—we walked away with confidence, clarity, and an action plan. Most importantly, we walked away more connected as a team.
If you’re using Buildertrend and wondering if you’re getting the most out of it, check your health score. And if you’re ready to truly commit to using the platform the way it’s designed, go to Buildertrend University—and bring your team!
You’ll be glad you did.
